Gold Above $5,000: What It Means for UAE Investors

IBV Gold17 March 20265 min read

A year ago, $5,000-per-ounce gold felt like a distant target. Today, it's the floor. As of March 2026, gold is trading at around $5,195 per ounce — more than $2,280 higher than it was just twelve months ago. That's a gain of over 78% in a single year. For context, the gold price only crossed the $3,000 mark for the first time in early 2025. It's now well past $5,000, and most analysts think this rally has more road ahead of it.

So what's driving this? Central banks are buying at scale. China's gold reserves grew for the 16th consecutive month in March 2026, now sitting at 74.22 million ounces. Globally, central banks are expected to purchase around 800 tonnes of gold in 2026 — roughly 26% of everything mined worldwide that year. When the largest financial institutions on the planet are stacking gold, it tells you something.

The US dollar is under pressure. Trade uncertainty and shifting global reserve currency dynamics have reduced demand for dollar-denominated assets. Gold, which has no counterparty risk and no government backing, benefits when confidence in paper currencies wavers. Inflation hasn't fully retreated either. Despite rate cycle adjustments across major economies, the cost of living in most countries remains elevated compared to pre-2020 levels. Gold has historically held its purchasing power across inflationary periods better than almost any other asset class.

Goldman Sachs recently raised its year-end 2026 gold forecast to $5,400 per ounce, citing growing numbers of private investors now treating gold as an essential part of a balanced portfolio — not just a hedge, but a core holding. J.P. Morgan forecasts gold averaging around $5,055 by Q4 2026, with further gains into 2027. Thomas Winmill, portfolio manager at Midas Funds, expects gold to surpass $5,500 within the next few months. These aren't fringe predictions — they're coming from some of the most conservative financial institutions in the world.

If you hold gold bullion — whether fractional coins or full 1oz pieces — this is the environment they were designed for. Gold / silver bullion has been the preferred physical gold coin for South African and UAE investors for nearly 60 years, and for good reason: they're liquid, globally recognised, and directly tied to the spot price of gold. A 1oz gold / silver bullion at today's prices represents a significant store of value. The fractional sizes — 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz — offer the same exposure at more accessible entry points.

The question isn't whether gold is expensive right now. At $5,195 an ounce, it is — relative to where it was. The question is what the next five to ten years look like, and whether a portion of your wealth should be in an asset that has no counterparty risk, no default risk, and no printing press. Physical gold — stored properly, acquired from a credible source — continues to do the job it's always done.
